From cornfields to crowns: Meet the 3 coaches who built a CNY boys soccer power over 63 years

Syracuse, N.Y. — Nearly three decades before the iconic entrance was immortalized in movie lore, players on the Fabius-Pompey boys soccer team understood the mystique of the cornfield.
In 1961, when Larry Carr took over a Falcons program in its second year of existence, the soccer field was located outside the elementary school. To reach it from the high school, one option was to cut through a large cornfield between the two buildings. At some point, it struck the players that it would be cool to arrive at home games by slowly sauntering from the high school locker room through the cornfields and onto the pitch.
